Are You Listening?

"Are you listening?" It's a question we ask all the time.

Parents ask their kids. Kids ask their parents. We ask our spouse, our coworkers, our friends. Usually it comes after we've been talking for a while and we're not quite sure the other person is actually hearing us. We just want someone to catch every little thing we're trying to say.

But here's the thing...

That shouldn't be a question you ever have to ask your coach.

At Precision Movement, listening isn't just something our coaches do, it's part of who they are.

Yes, they're there to teach movement, correct technique, and guide you through the workout. They want you to move safely and effectively. But that's only one piece of coaching.

The bigger responsibility is listening.

When you tell us something doesn't feel right, we listen.

When you ask a question, we listen.

When you mention that your shoulder has been bothering you for weeks or your back feels different today, we aren't just waiting for our turn to talk. We're listening because those little comments often reveal something much bigger.

We've seen it happen countless times.

Someone says, "My hip hurts when I squat."

On the surface, that sounds like a squat problem.

But after asking a few more questions and really listening, we discover it's actually sciatic pain that's been bothering them outside the gym, too. Suddenly we're not just changing their squat, we're helping solve a problem they didn't even realize was connected.

That's the power of being heard.

But listening goes beyond movement.

One of the phrases we use often is that we're more than a gym. We believe that with everything we have.

It might look like a coach asking, "How are you doing today?"

And you answer, "I'm good."

Except...your voice says something different.

Your energy is off.

Your focus isn't there.

A coach who is truly listening hears that "I'm good" isn't the whole story.

So they ask another question.

"What's been going on?"

"Everything okay at home?"

"Seems like you've got a lot on your shoulders."

And little by little, the real story comes out.

Maybe work has been overwhelming. Maybe your marriage is struggling. Maybe you're caring for aging parents while raising kids. Maybe life just feels like one giant dumpster fire and you're exhausted from trying to put out every blaze.

Of course your workout is affected.

How could it not be?

Sometimes the reason you're struggling through today's workout has nothing to do with today's workout.

It's everything you carried through the front door before class even started.

That's why our coaches pay attention.

That's why they ask questions.

That's why they care.

Because helping someone become healthier isn't always about adding weight to the bar or shaving seconds off a workout. Sometimes the greatest coaching happens before the first rep ever begins.

Sometimes the real work is uncovering the root issue.

When we understand what's happening beneath the surface, we can coach you better, not just as an athlete, but as a person.

That's what "More Than a Gym" means to us.

We're here to celebrate your wins, encourage you through setbacks, help you reach your fitness goals, and remind you that you don't have to carry life's weight alone.

We'll coach your squat.

We'll help your conditioning.

We'll celebrate your PRs.

But first...

We'll listen.
